Winky must have been loved once. He sure seemed well trained. He was picked up by animal control in a grocery store parking lot, matted, cigarette burns in his fur, and his right eye horribly infected. The humane society wanted to put him down. A local vet intervened and, although Winky lost the eye, saved him. I was picking up my cat from being spayed and was talking with a receptionist there about small dogs and I heard his tale... apparently lots of people wanted a dog like him but when they found out there was just one eye, well, they'd pass.

So I brought him home. What else could I do? Now he's king of this castle, but the traitor likes my husband better! No gratitude, dogs these days. If my husband isn't home and you say "Where's Daddy?" Winky jumps up, runs barking his fool head off, to the door to look for him. But he is the sweetest animal I have ever met. So gentle and loving, and for a 10" high dog, he amazes everyone by running and jumping into our arms.

Moral of the story? Never get an animal for cosmetic reasons. The animals that have been through the most know it and treat you with more love than any other animals.
